Midnight Tales is a small, independent reading site. Every story here is free to read, and you never need an account to read anything. Signing in is optional — it only exists so you can keep a shelf of saved stories and pick up where you left off.

What we collect

If you never sign in: nothing that identifies you. Your saved stories and reading position are kept only in your own browser (local storage) and never leave your device.

If you create an account:

— Your email address and a securely hashed password, used only to sign you in.
— The stories you add to your shelf.
— Your reading position (which chapter you were on) in each story.

That is the whole list. No real name, no address, no phone number, no payment details — this site does not sell anything.

Anonymous traffic statistics

We measure traffic in two ways:

— Umami, self-hosted on our own server (stats.greenstonenovel.com). It records page views and referrers without cookies and without tracking individuals across sites.
— Microsoft Clarity, which records aggregate behaviour such as scrolling and clicks in order to improve page layout. Clarity may collect device and interaction data according to Microsoft's own privacy terms.

Cookies and local storage

We use local storage and a session cookie to keep you signed in, remember your dark/light theme and font size, and remember that you dismissed the cookie notice. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies are used.

Advertising

All stories on this site are free to read, and the site currently carries no advertising. If advertising is introduced in the future, this page will be updated before any ad is served. Two things will not change: we will not use your shelf or reading history to target ads, and your account page (My Shelf) will not display ads. Where the law requires consent before advertising cookies are set, we will ask for it first.

Where your data is stored

Account records are stored in a managed database hosted on Supabase (Singapore region). Traffic statistics are stored on our own server. We do not transfer your data to advertisers or data brokers.

What we never do

We do not sell your data, we do not send marketing email, and we do not share reader information with third parties except the service providers listed above, which process it only on our behalf.

Your choices

— Remove one story: open My Shelf and tap Remove.
— Delete everything: open the account menu in the top navigation and choose Delete my data — this erases your shelf and reading history immediately.
— Stop being signed in: choose Sign out from the same menu. Your shelf then lives only in the browser you were using, and you can clear it by clearing site data.
— Block statistics: any ad-blocker or browser tracking protection will stop both analytics tools.

Age

This site publishes horror fiction and is intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the update date at the top of this page will change. The policy will never change in a way that expands what is collected without saying so here.
