About This Site

Midnight Tales is dedicated to Chinese suspense — stories in the tradition of guai-tan, China's old tales of the strange.

In the quietest hour of the day, Midnight Tales keeps you company with a story worth reading slowly.

What Makes It Chinese?

Western suspense leans on detectives, serial killers, and psychological thrillers. Ours runs on older machinery: folk taboos that must never be broken, village rites and offerings to restless ancestors, hungry ghosts and paper money for the dead, karmic debts repaid blade by blade.

The dread here does not live in a haunted Victorian mansion. It lives in a mountain village where the rain brings wedding guests who are not people, in a rice jar that must stay closed, in a night bus whose destination reads “Heaven”. And alongside the folk horror sit wuxia blades and imperial palaces — swordsmen avenging burned fortresses, palace maids outwitting time itself.

Content Advisory

Midnight Tales may include violence, death, disturbing content, and — in some works — depictions of sexual assault and dismemberment. Reader discretion is strongly advised; not recommended for readers under 18 or those sensitive to the themes below.
